The Umbrella Project

Business Description / Hours:

Why are we called the Umbrella Project?
Our family lost our father and husband unexpectedly in 2015. Our then 22-year-old daughter embarked on her own healing journey by thru-hiking the entire Appalachian Trail the following summer. Our dad was an artist who loved to engage people everywhere with his “umbrella project.” He would spread umbrellas across streets, float them on lakes, hang them from trees—and get the local community involved. When we thought about a name for our program, we realized we already had one that represents shelter, sanctuary and inclusion—and honors the genesis of this program.

“I believe that the healing properties of a long-distance hike are like no other. The peace that nature brings does not compare to anything else. I also developed a whole new level of strength and resilience while on the Trail that I had not known was within me. Without my hiking experience, my grief journey would have been much more challenging.”

Mission:
To secure low-cost veterinary services for stray, feral, and farm cats and their caretakers. To help people live with these cats in their communities and to teach people how to care for these cats for the span of their lives.
How We Help:
Tip Me Frederick secures low cost vet services for caretakers of feral and free roaming cats. After you fill out our Pledge Form we will make your vet appointment a week or two in advance. We will loan you a trap, if needed, and instruct you in how to have a successful trapping. We ask that you have a safe and secure location to house the cats overnight for 2 nights: one before and one after surgery. Find the forms you need here.

We will help individuals learn how to manage a colony of outdoor cats; including how provide food, water and shelter. We will give ongoing support for updating vaccines and other medical care your cats may require. We work with other area rescues to help you find adoption services for friendly lost or abandoned cats and kittens. We can also teach you to tame feral kittens if you’d like to find adoption services for them.

We can provide help and support in re-homing by working with farms and businesses; showing them the advantages of keeping outdoor colony cats. Remember, re-homing is always the last option for cats or colonies, and finding the right placement may take a long time. Re-homing is also an arduous task and requires weeks of confinement to prepare the cats for their new environment. It is always best if the cats can stay where they are, as that is their home. We will provide help and support in speaking with neighbors, management and others to encourage them to allow cats to stay where they are, with a dedicated caretaker.

Yes-Young Onset Dementia Education & Support
Business Category:
Business Description / Hours:

People with young onset dementia may be in their 40s, 50s and early 60s.

These people have families, careers or may even be caregivers themselves when dementia derails their life. The age of people with young onset dementia often means their symptoms of dementia may lead to loss of employment. The implications of unemployment are multiple, and include financial, psychological and social consequences to themselves and their families.

The younger age of those affected by YOD naturally means that their families and support systems are also much younger- they may have school age children, young adult children, or may have a parent as caregiver. Likewise, spouses and partners may find themselves thrown into the role of caregiver much, much earlier than they ever expected.
