Business Description / Hours:

L’Arche Frederick celebrates the gifts of people with intellectual disabilities and builds relationships across differences. We believe communities thrive when they welcome and honor the contributions of people with intellectual disabilities. We’re committed to building a more just and compassionate society where all experience belonging.

For eight years, we have built an inclusive community alongside our neighbors with and without intellectual disabilities. Monthly social programs and prayer gatherings have formed the foundation of our community life. We commit to walking together through all the changes life presents, whether we live with the experiences of intellectual disabilities or not, and that sense of belonging extends to the broader community of Frederick. Thanks to our supportive neighbors and dedicated partnerships, L’Arche Frederick is ready to step into our next stage of growth – opening the first L’Arche home in Maryland!

Our unique model of care unites adults with intellectual disabilities and live-in assistants in homes where everyone chooses to live together. The Core Members (adults with disabilities) receive support from Assistants (direct support professionals) in all aspects of daily living based on their specific needs. Together, they contribute to a family-like environment that incorporates shared responsibilities, mutual relationships, and access to community services. Key elements of the home include:

Belonging: People who choose to live together and support one another, as a family
Quality Care: Skilled assistants with a focus on authentic relationships
Spirituality: Welcoming and respecting diverse spiritual beliefs in an interdenominational Christian community
Lifelong Homes: Offering a loving home for as long as the core member desires
As members of an international federation of 154 L’Arche communities in 38 countries, we know this model of intentional, inclusive community living works.

Transformative Impact

Your gift to the Unity Campaign will support the founding of our first home and have a transformational impact on the lives of adults with disabilities. The first core members will receive long-term housing, transportation, daily life supports, and a place of belonging, with access to meaningful friendships and social activities for life.

Unity funds will contribute to costs associated with furnishing the home, securing a house van, and making environmental modifications to the home to ensure accessibility for core members. Additionally, while L’Arche Frederick will be able to receive state funding for a portion of our residential services, we will not be eligible for funding for the first six months after we open our doors. In this way, your partnership is instrumental in crafting a loving, supportive foundation for our first home.

Literacy Council of Frederick County
Address: 110 E Patrick St, Frederick, MD

Business Description / Hours:

Adult Literacy is a Survival Skill …

Yet … more than 25,000 Frederick County adults struggle with everyday life skills related to literacy. This includes native English speakers who can’t read or write, and English language learners. These skills are fundamental to work, prosperity, health, and family stability.

The COVID-19 public health crisis is dramatically impacting families in our communities who struggle with literacy. Challenges they faced prior to this crisis are only compounded when confronted with trying to understand alerts, access health resources, support their children’s at home schooling and maintain stable employment. Thanks to using distance learning platforms, the Literacy Council is continuing to provide programs and services online through remote instruction — expanding access to classes and tutoring, and training for new volunteers.

The Literacy Council of Frederick County’s programs and services impacted over 335 adults last year. 150+ volunteers contributed 12,800+ hours conducting individual or small group tutoring; conducting class instruction in beginning literacy, conversation, pronunciation, basic computer skills, writing and civics; supporting new parent literacy and workplace English classes; providing information and referral for other community programs; and contributing to the organization’s administration and outreach.

Many of our students fall within ALICE household metrics, experiencing financial hardships, being unemployed or underemployed, or working multiple part-time minimum wage jobs. While these are multifaceted and complex issues, adult literacy is the one factor that can have a positive impact across the board.

The Unity Campaign helps to raise the financial support necessary to provide literacy programs by providing an efficient and community-wide platform to raise awareness and much-needed funds to our Basic Literacy (native English speakers) and English as a Second Language programs, including two new initiatives:

Parent Outreach Program: Increase the literacy and English language skills of parents of young children to enhance early childhood development, school readiness and school success by partnering with the Judy Center and Butterfly Ridge, Hillcrest, Lincoln and Waverley Elementary Schools.

Workplace Literacy Program: Increase workplace literacy and English skills for workers in hospitality and social service jobs to improve employment opportunities and provide a long-term, lasting solution to financial stability.

Mission
Our mission is to help refugees transition to life in the Frederick region and ultimately become self-sufficient. Before a refugee family arrives, we assist LSSNCA in finding them suitable housing in the area. We then prepare their home with donated furniture and household items. Then, once the family arrives, we continue to support them by providing assistance with accessing vital resources including those related to cultural adaptation, job placement, transportation, school enrollment, health services, and navigating bureaucracy. Additionally, as English speaking skills are important to achieving independence, we help families enroll in ESL classes or receive in-home ESL tutoring.

At Second Chances Garage we put cars in the hands of low-income working individuals and families who do not have a car. Imagine for a moment your life without a car. Hard, isn’t it? Yet too many hard-working low-income Frederick families wake up every morning having to face life without a car, relying on the bus, expensive cabs or Lyft. Public transportation is inadequate. A 9 min car ride can take 45 minutes by bus. Imagine, if you were a single mom, getting your kids to daycare, then to work and maybe to FCC for classes. Think about making that all work without a car. The things we take for granted, like running out to the grocery store, going to appointments, taking the kids to after school activities, finding a better job or simply visiting friends or relatives becomes a major hurdle. We are a unique local nonprofit. We accept donations of used vehicles, refurbish them, and transform lives by giving those cars a second chance in the hands of those so much in need. To keep cars on the road so people can get to work, we also provide reduced-cost auto repair to low-income Frederick families. To continue and grow and transform lives we need your help. Without a car, opportunities are not just limited, many are simply unavailable.

Helping Children in Need Sleep Better
All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. In Idaho and across the US, too many boys and girls go without a bed—or even a pillow—to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets, and even floors. This can affect their happiness and health.

That’s where Sleep in Heavenly Peace® comes in. We’re a group of volunteers dedicated to building, assembling and delivering top-notch bunk beds to children and families in need. Our organization has grown steadily over time, and we’re working on opening more chapters in different states to serve more people.

SOAR, Supporting Older Adults through Resources, Inc.
Address: PO Box 1603
Frederick, Maryland
Business Category:
Business Description / Hours:

SOAR has been providing services to seniors aged 65 and older in Frederick County since 2015. Seniors are the largest growing population and are among the most vulnerable and underserved among us. Seniors live on a fixed income without the ability to increase that income for the remainder of their lives. Many of them are health impaired and rely on important medications, home modifications, and medical equipment to assist them. They have served their families, their communities, and their country and now many need our support.

SOAR was created to meet the increasing needs that exist for this special population. We work hard to ensure that our seniors are treated with dignity and respect and strive to meet their needs. Many live in substandard housing an do not know where to turn. Many live without the ability to get to the store, the doctor, the pharmacy as they either cannot afford a car or can no longer drive. Basic, essential every day needs are difficult for them to obtain. SOAR is an organization that provides direct assistance and support without the bureaucracy, red tape, and frustrations that often exist. We work with physicians, social workers, nurses, and therapists to support their patients/clients and have a great partnership within the Senior Services division, local hospital, and department of social services.

Without the vital support that SOAR provides, many seniors would be left feeling hopeless, forgotten, and often living without their basic needs.

Eviction papers; a notice the electricity or water will be shut off; a prescription medicine that is unaffordable – these are a few examples of financial crisis that some of our Frederick County neighbors face.

An illness or hospitalization that keeps a worker from their job and their pay; a trusted friend/husband/wife walks out on others they have been caring for; the only car quits running and needs expensive repair; angry family members cut off their help and support – these are a few of the reasons that cause financial crises.

People just barely getting by paycheck to paycheck simply cannot meet all their obligations when the unexpected happens. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is there with compassion, a listening ear, and usually some financial assistance to get them through.

Donations to St. Vincent de Paul Society go directly into the grateful hands of our Frederick County neighbors in need. Vincentians are an all-volunteer group, and you can be assured your entire gift will be used intelligently, respectfully, and with a prayer that those receiving the funds find or regain stability, health, and security in every area of their life.

Through its Critical Services Partnership with the Frederick County Public Schools, the Spanish Speaking Community of Maryland (SSCM) addresses the many unmet needs of students and their families related to domestic violence, human trafficking, neglect and other abuses.

SSCM offers a safe haven environment that promotes dignity, self-sufficiency, and open and honest interactions with those who may be victims of abuse. Working in coordination with our many partner organizations and FCPS counselors, principals and other school personnel, SSCM’s staff removes language barriers so that victims feel safe and empowered to report these types of acts.

Our team provides confidential legal guidance and representation; arranges mental health referrals for victims and their children; offers assistance with employment opportunities; and provides clothing and other essentials for everyday living through direct support and through the efforts of our partners. SSCM also prepares U Visa applications, which assist crime victims and their families; translates documents; helps report violations to authorities; takes victims to collect medical and police reports; and ensures victims are protected and have the resources needed to embark upon a new way of life.

The Arc of Frederick County

Business Description / Hours:

The Arc of Frederick County assists persons with developmental disabilities and their families to obtain the services they need and want in order to become as independent as possible and to enjoy quality of life within our community.

The Arc of Frederick County hosts a wide variety of support groups for parents, families and individuals. This allows us to reach out to people in different ways and continue to meet ever-changing needs of individuals and families. We frequently receive many requests for different support groups as individuals and families want the opportunity to discuss a variety of topics in a safe and open setting. We currently offer the following Support Groups: Parent Support Group, Mother’s Support Group, Hispanic Support Group, Brain Injury Support Group, Sibling Workshops and Parents’ Day Out. The Arc believes in serving families holistically so it is critical to offer different groups to meet the needs of different audiences (and to make sure no one is getting overlooked or unnoticed).

The Arc of Frederick County is anticipating budget cuts on a statewide level and this will require The Arc to cut back on specific programming and unfortunately we will need to scale back our time spent on support groups. We would like to apply monies raised through The Unity Campaign towards our efforts for support groups as we know it is a very valuable resource for individuals and families. The Arc of Frederick County greatly values the opportunity to be a part of The Unity Campaign as its collective impact on the Frederick community is incredible. It is important for members of the Frederick community to see all of the nonprofits working together to serve Frederick. By donors seeing the greater impact, it adds leverage to those requesting donations.
